Roulette gets its name from French word, “small wheel”. The name of the roulette inventor is Blaise Pascal, a French scientist fascinated by perpetual motion devices who dedicated his life mostly to study them. The first French roulette wheel was seen in the 17th century and in 1842 the antique roulette wheel was already very popular among rich people in Paris.

Now, people already got to think how to obtain a better house advantage from the French roulette wheel, so Francois and Louis Blanc invented the roulette wheel with a single ‘0’. This way, we have now the two styles of roulette, the American roulette wheel and the European roulette wheel.

Roulette is one of the oldest casino games and remains up until this very day, a very popular and loved game among gamblers, but today it's not just for the elite. It is a simple game of chance that is made available by casino owners for everyone; it's easy to understand roulette betting rules and has a simple objective, that of guessing the winning number that will appear on the roulette wheel.

As I've already said, there are two types of roulette wheel. One that has 37 numbered slots (0 to 36) which is the first roulette wheel invented, called the European roulette wheel. The second one is the American roulette wheel that has and extra 00 on the wheel, with a total of 38 numbered slots.

The roulette table layout has two separate roulette betting areas, the inside betting area and the outside betting area. The roulette betting rules for these two areas are as follows:

The inside roulette betting zone contains the individual numbers that are arranged on the roulette table layout in 3 columns and 12 rows and at the top of the columns the zero and double zero numbers can be easily observed. From the 36 numbers (excluding 0 or/and 00) 18 numbers are colored with red and the rest of 18 numbers are colored with black/yellow. The player can make several types of betting on roulette; they can bet a number straight up or include the line between numbers to select a combination of numbers.

Each type of bet has a different payout, so it would be in your interest to know about this as much as possible:

  • Single Number : Pays 35 to 1.
  • Split between two numbers: Pays 17 to 1.
  • Quad between 4 numbers (place your chip at the center of 4 adjacent numbers): Pays 8 to 1.
  • Double street bet (you bet on 2 rows with 6 numbers): Pays 5 to 1.
  • Line bet / street bet (you bet on 1 row with 3 numbers): Pays 11 to 1.

The outside roulette betting area is made of boxes for columns, red/black and odd or even or different groups of numbers. In the outside betting zone the roulette betting is based on colors and it has 3 types of betting:

  • Odd or even that pays 1 to 1
  • Big (bets on numbers 19-36), pays 1 to 1
  • Small (bets on numbers 1-18), pays 1 to 1
  • Column bets (bets on set of numbers: 1 to 12; 13 to 24; 25 to 36) are all paying 2 to 1.

The way in which the game evolves is also pretty simple, the players makes his betting decision, placing his chips on the desired bet on the roulette table layout and then the dealer will spin the wheel in one way and throw the ball in the wheel in the opposite way. After the ball rests in a numbered slot, the dealer announces the winning number pay the existing winner or winners and finally collects all losing chips.
