Learning the Roulette Vocabulary Part II

Jan 16th 2008
Roulette Vocabulary

In my last “Learning the Roulette Vocabulary” article I covered the names and the types of roulette bets available. In this roulette vocabulary article I will go over some of the most common roulette terms you will hear at the table. These roulette terms are not specifically referring to roulette bets so I hope this page will be useful for you.

A Cheva: it means ‘split bet’ and it is an expression derived from French, reflecting the origins of the game.

Action: this is a roulette term used to specify a definite amount of money bet during a particular time period

American Wheel: it refers to one of the roulette games/wheels variations. This is a roulette wheel having an extra 00 pocket next to the 0 pocket.

European Wheel/ French Wheel: it refers to one of the roulette games/wheels variations. This is a roulette wheel having only a 0 pocket

Backtrack: it refers to the fix external part of the roulette wheel around which the ball spins.

Bankroll: this roulette term refers to the amount of play money of a player.

Bet on the Layout: when one says this it means that the person will bet on the numbered part of the roulette table. The same as an inside bet

Carr': as it is a game with French routs, this is a roulette term derived from French and it refers to a corner bet.

Cheval:more French…when one asks a ‘cheval’ the persona actually announces a split bet.

Colonne:yes, French again. It refers to a column bet.

Croupier: the casino employee who runs the roulette game play.

En Prison:this is a roulette rule which you will it only in few casinos. This rules relates to even money roulette bets like the red/black, odd/even. On even money bets, if the ball lands on 0 or 00 using the en prison rule the player can either retrieve half of his bet or he may leave it for the next spin. If the player chose to leave it, if 0 or 00 is hit the player loses. If the En Prison rule is not being used, the original bet is simply lost.

Even Money:it refers to bets that pay 1:1.

Inside Bet:it refers to single number bets, split bets, street bets, and corner bets.

La Partage:similar to the en prison rule with the difference that a player can only get back half of the value for the bet and he may not leave it for the next spin.

Outside Bet: it refers to the bets labeled on the outside section of the table layout referring to bets like: red or black, odd or even, high or low; it also includes dozen bets and column bets.
