The exact origins of roulette are shrouded in mystery. There is no clear information about this subject. That is why some historians believe the game originates from early 17th century France. They believe the creator of the game is an unknown French mathematician. The term "roulette" is French and it means "small wheel".

Other historians do not consider France the birthplace of roulette. They believe roulette originates from China and it spread to Europe thanks to the monks that traded with the Chinese. None the less, we do know for sure that the French are responsible for developing the modern game of roulette, the one that we still play today.

In the 18th century roulette became a very popular game. This is when Prince Charles of Monaco introduced the game to his kingdom as a means of drawing attention from the poor economics situation. The game quickly caught on and enjoyed a wide spread popularity. This is when modifications were made to the game, modifications that are still in use today.

Roulette then spread to all corners of the world and became popular everywhere it was introduced. The roulette game played all over America is very similar to the one played in Monaco in the 18th century. The changes to the game made in the 18th century are still in use today. Roulette's popularity dramatically increased in America during the California gold rush.

When you think about casinos and gambling one game immediately comes to mind: roulette. In fact the image of a roulette wheel is generally associated with gambling. You should know that there are two types of roulette wheels and roulette games: American roulette and European roulette. These two games are basically played the same way, but there are a few rule variations. For example the chips have different colors and the payouts vary.

The dealer will use a stick to move the chips about when playing European roulette, but he will use his hands when playing American roulette. The rules do not vary much and the game play is basically the same for both types of roulette. The thing to remember is that both variations are entertaining, exciting to play, a great way to have fun and win some money in the same time.
