Free online poker - A great opportunity for beginners

When it comes to playing poker online there are many poker variations to choose from. Among all of them the most popular is Texas Hold’Em poker. Televised poker tournaments and the internet have played an important part in boosting this game’s popularity. But there are other reasons why it is such a popular game. First of all the rules are rather simple and it should take you little time to understand them. And if you play a few hands you will definitely understand how the game goes. Although it is a simple game, mastering it will take time and effort on your part.

Texas Hold’Em is a community game. You will be dealt two cards face down, but all the other cards will be dealt face up. Those cards are community cards and all the players at the table can use them to make up the best poker hand that they can. Texas Hold’Em combines elements of stud and draw poker. The main goal of the game is to win the pot. You can do so by getting the strongest poker hand or by buying the pot.

Below you will find a detailed and comprehensive list of all the possible poker hands that you may get. I have started with the weakest poker hand and moved on to the elusive straight flush.

- No-pair or high card;

This is the worst possible poker hand. Let’s say that you have been dealt a Queen and a 7. This means that you have a “Queen high”. Professional poker players call this hand “garbage” because you have little to no chance of winning.

Your Queen high will beat a Jack high. If the other player also has a Queen high, the next high denomination card determines who wins the hand. Say the other player has a Queen and a 9. In this case you have lost.

One of the most promising high card poker hands is Ace-King. This

- One pair;

This refers to when you have been dealt two cards of the same denomination, such as Queen-Queen, or Ace-Ace. One pair will always beat a high card.

- Two pair;

This refers to when you have been dealt two pairs, such as Ace-Ace and Queen-Queen. Two pair beats one pair. If you opponent also has two pair, the player holding the higher ranking pair will win.

Your Ace-Ace and Queen-Queen will beat a 5-5 and 3-3. If the other player also has a pair of Aces, the winner is determined according to the other pair or “kicker”. Say the other player has an Ace-Ace and Jack-Jack. You have won.

- Three of a kind;

This refers to when you have been dealt 3 cards of the same denomination, such as Jack-Jack-Jack. Three of a kind beats two pair.

- Straight;

This refers to when you have been dealt 5 consecutive ranking cards of different suits, such as 2-3-4-5-6. A straight beats three of a kind. If two players have a straight, the winner will be determined according to the high card. So our example 2-3-4-5-6 will be beat by a 3-4-5-6-7.

- Flush;

This refers to when you have been dealt 5 cards of the same suit. They need not be in consecutive order as ong as they are of the same suit. A flush will beat a straight. . If two players have a flush, the winner will be determined according to the high card. If the both players have the same high card, the next high denomination card determines who wins the hand.

- Full house;

This refers to when you have been dealt three of a kind and a one pair, such as 5-5-5-8-8. A full house will beat a flush. If two players have a full house, the highest ranking three of a kind wins. In the eventuality that both players have the same three of a kind, the outcome is determined by the one pair. So our 5-5-5-8-8 will win over a 5-5-5-6-6.

- Four of a kind;

This refers to when you have been dealt four cards of the same denomination, such as 7-7-7-7. Four of a kind will beat a full house. If two players have four of a kind, the higher denomination four of a kind will win. So our 7-7-7-7 will be beat by a 9-9-9-9. But if both players have the same four of a kind, the kicker or the fifth card determines the outcome.

- Straight flush;

This is the strongest possible poker hand. It combines the elements of a straight and a flush. A straight refers to when you have been dealt 5 consecutive ranking cards and a flush refers to when you have been dealt 5 cards of the same suit. In conclusion a straight flush is when you have been dealt 5 consecutive ranking cards of the same suit.

A straight flush will beat four of a kind. If both players have a straight flush, the high card determines the winner.

The only poker hand that can beat a straight flush is a royal flush. A royal flush refers to when you have been dealt a 10-Jack-Queen-King-Ace of clubs.

Two hole cards will be dealt to each player after the blinds bets have been placed. A player will place the small blind and another player will place the big blind. A small blind bet is usually equal in value to half the lower stake. So for a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game the small blind would be $5. The big blind bet must be made by the player sitting to the left of the small blind. A big blind bet is usually equal in value to the lower stake limit. So for a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game the big blind would be $10. The blind will rotate clockwise around the table and each player will have their turn of making this bet.

The first round of betting will now begin. The betting will start from the player to the left of the player that made the big blind bet.  If he wants to stay in the game he must call the big blind. His options are to call, raise or fold.

Calling means that you want to place a wager equal in value to the wager placed by the previous player.

Raising your bet means increasing the amount wagered by the previous player. You must call his bet by placing the same betting amount as he did and increase that with and additional raise amount. So for a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game raising means that you will automatically call the previous bet of $10 and place a raise of another $10. You will have to wager a total of $20.

Folding means that you give up on your hand. If you do so you are out of the game and you will lose all your wagers.

All following players will get to call, raise or fold. The player that placed the small blind must make the difference between small and big blinds if he wants to stay in the game. He must also match any raises made by other players.

The last player to bet is the one that made the big blind. He may fold, call or raise. If he decides to raise he cannot do this more than a maximum of three times.

After all the players have finished making their bets it is time for the flop. This is when the dealer will place three cards on the table. These cards are dealt face up and are community cards. Community cards refer to the fact that any player can use community cards to make up a poker hand.

The second round of betting will now begin. The betting will start from the player that made the small blind bet. He may bet or check. If he checks and all the other players also check, no amounts will be added to the pot.

Checking means passing on your turn to bet. You simply do not want to make a bet and you pass. The next player will get to check, bet or raise.

If any player decides to bet, all the other players that checked must call his bet in order to stay in the game.

After all the players have finished making their bets it is time for the turn or 4th street. This is when the dealer will place a forth card on the table, face up.

The third round of betting will now begin. The bets are set to the high limit for the third round of betting. For a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game the high limit is $20.

The betting will start from the player that made the small blind bet. He may check, bet, raise or fold. All following player may check, bet, raise or fold.

After all the players have finished making their bets it is time for the river. This is when the dealer will place a fifth card on the table, face up.

The forth and final round of betting will now begin. The bets are set to the high limit for the third round of betting. For a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game the high limit is $20. The betting will start from the player that made the small blind bet. He may check, bet, raise or fold. All following player may check, bet, raise or fold.

After all the players have finished making their bets it is time to determine the winner. The player with the strongest poker hand will win and get the pot. In the eventuality that there is a tie, the pot will be split equally between the winning players. The round and the hand are over.

There are some aspects of playing poker that are more difficult to master. First of all you should try not to become predictable. So you should constantly change your style of play, even during games at the same table. This way you will not be a predictable player, and that is a good thing. Bluffing is another technique that you can use, but you must know that it is rather difficult to figure out the right time to bluff, and even more difficult to bluff without being called.

Note that there is more to poker that knowing the value of the hands and the rules of the game. So postpone your matches with poker pros for later on when you will be a skilled poker player. Know that you know a few things about poker you should try out your hand. Do this by playing free online poker. This way you can work on your poker skills and not spend a dime. It will prepare you for those real money poker games and will hone your skills.

Although free online poker is a great idea for beginners, there are some drawbacks. People tend to play more loosely since there is no stake in the game. Some players get carried away and bluff way too much. You can spot a bluffer by observing the way other players bet or the time it takes for them to act when it is their turn. If you keep an eye out you will notice any changes in a players betting pattern. That is when you know that player is up to something.

Play Texas Hold’Em Sit and Go poker and walk away with a profit

The good thing about participating in Texas Hold’Em Sit and Go tournaments is that you get to learn Texas Hold’Em and improve your poker play. In this article we will talk about several tips that you can use your Sit and Go poker tournaments and improve your chances of winning.

The truth of the matter is that Texas Hold’Em Sit and Go tournaments are just an accelerated version of a Texas Hold’Em multi-table tournament. You get to play a large number of hands in a short amount of time.

In a typical Texas Hold’Em tournament you may not last long enough, and consequently you may not get to play a large number of hands. But in a Sit and Go tournament you get to play a large number of hands and you get a feel for what is going on in the tournament.

We have split Sit and Go tournaments into three parts:

- the beginning;
- the middle;
- the end.

Everyone has the same chip stack in the beginning of the tournament. The chip stack is large compared to the blinds, and as a consequence you are free to play as you wish.

You will always want to win the pot. You are playing to win, after all. But you must remember that when taking part in a Sit and Go tournament it is a lot more important to win pots later in the game. The incentive to in the pot is not that big in the beginning, because the blinds and the pots are smaller.

Later in the game you will want to have plenty of chips. The reason for that is very strategic. There will be the same number of chips, but fewer players at the table. This means that on average, the players still sitting at the table will have a lot more chips than they gad in the beginning of the tournament.

Later in the game doubling up your chip stack will have more impact. You’ll also have to win many more pots to do so in the beginning. But later on all it takes is winning a couple of pots and you will double up your chips stack.

The blinds go up very fast in Sit and Go tournaments. That is why you should pay attention in the beginning of the tournament. You will find yourself in a lot of trouble when the blinds increase if you lose your chips early in the game.

Some poker players do not even play in the beginning. They simply fold every hand and wait for the tournament to progress and the blinds to increase. This way they hope of winning one or two pots later on. These guys are playing extremely tight, but I guess there are other worse strategies out there.

The right time to bluff when playing online poker

If you want to be a pro poker player then you must be able to bluff, and bluff at the right time. Although it is not used as often as people believe, the bluff is probably the most talked-about poker concept. If we were to exclude bluffing from poker, then the game would not be as exciting. You become predictable if you do not bluff and consequently you will not be able to maximize your winnings, let alone win. When you have no chance of winning the pot, you bluff. When you are trying to steal the pot before all the cards are dealt, you bluff.

Calculating if a bluff is profitable or not in a cash game is a relatively simple process. You simply compare the odds of making a successful bluff to the size of the bet and the size of the pot. This means that you must be able to predict if the other players around the poker table will fold or not.

Below I have listed the factors that you must take into consideration when making up your mind whether to bluff or not:

- The type of opponent you are facing;

- The number of players that you are competing with;

- Your table image;

- Your ability to “read” the other players;

- The board (if any);

- The size of the pot;

- Your position;

The type of opponent you are facing:

There is no sense in bluffing calling stations. They will call no matter what you are holding and no matter how well you bluff. This is one of the most common mistakes. So make sure that you are not playing against a calling station, but against a player that is good enough to fold a hand.

Do not bluff weak opponents who call with anything (referred to as “calling stations”). This is the most common mistake. Be sure that your opponent is a good enough player to fold a hand.

The number of players that you are competing with:

As a rule of thumb you should not bluff a field of three or more players, especially if you are playing Limit poker. Your bluff will be a success when playing against just one player. Not only do you have to fool just one player, but the pot is also smaller and thus less attractive.

Your table image:

If you have a loose table image, your bluff will not be successful. But the exact opposite will happen if you have a tight image. Your opponents will be more likely to call if you were recently caught bluffing. In other situations reverse psychology can be useful. Let’s say that you were caught bluffing by a good player. If the thinks you are also a good player, he will believe that you would not be foolish enough to bluff again.

Your ability to “read” the other players:

You will be able to identify good bluffing opportunities if you “read” the game well and are able to put your opponents on likely holdings. This skill though is rather difficult to master.

The board:

A bluff is less likely to succeed if the board looks like it could have hit your opponents or presents many drawing possibilities. You are well advised to look for boards without many draws or cards that are likely to improve your opponents’ hands. The bluff is more likely to succeed if you can represent a hand.

The size of the pot:

If the pot is big and your opponents get good pot odds, then they will most likely call. But if you bluff on a big pot and get away with it, the reward is that much sweeter. You should let your good judgment tell you when to bluff and when not to bluff.

Your position:

You will usually have more access to information regarding your opponents’ hands if you are sitting in late position. This way you will have better chances of successfully bluffing.

If you want to make the best decision about bluffing or not, then you must take all the factors presented above into consideration.

Online poker playing and luck

- Do not press your luck unless you really have to.

Let’s say that you are in a deep stack tournament and you want to win the pot. In this case you should play a good game, make the right decisions at the right time. What you do not want to do is put yourself in the situation where you need to get really lucky to win. Remember that you are participating in a deep stack tournament, and the outcome of the game should depend on your skill and not on your luck. There is a good reason why the top pros say over and over again that they won’t get broke early with any hand but pocket aces. They make the best decisions; they do not let luck decide the outcome.

Let’s say that you have been dealt an Ace-King or Big Slick. This may very well be the most overplayed hand in the history of poker. It looks like a very strong hand, but in fact it isn’t. It has the chance of becoming a great hand, but only if you get the right cards on the flop. It is like flipping a coin, you have good odds of winning only if you hit the right side of the coin. And that does not go well with the pros which do not like to take risks in the beginning of the tournament. By playing such a hand you will most likely lose money. You need to get really lucky in order to win, so why not sit this round out. Save your money for better hands.

- Plan ahead for the luck you get.

There is no shortage of situations when “unlucky” cards will be dealt out. By “unlucky” I mean cards that are useless to you, cards that will not help your hand get any stronger. That is why you need to plan ahead. By doing so, you can turn things around and use the situation to your advantage. These useless cards are called phantom outs. The reason why they are called this way is because they would help your hand if you, in fact, had that hand. This is how you can use phantom outs. Simply look at a flop that’s two-suited or two-straighted and tell yourself that if a coordinated card comes on the turn you’re going to bet it as if you own it. This will give you the chance of winning the pot.

- Take luck out of the picture.

If you get all the players at the table to fold, it doesn’t matter what cards come next. Strong players play strong for a reason, and that reason is so that the outcome is determined by the power of their bets, not by the power of luck. Personally I find that when I’m really on my game I’m not particularly lucky. My game is dominant and because of that luck plays an insignificant role.

Keep in mind that you need not be lucky if all the other players fold their hands.

- Get over unlucky brakes.

No matter how well you play, sometimes you will run into a patch of bad luck and you will lose. It happens to you, me, and every other poker player in the world, just like it happens to slots players and craps players and everyone else who gambles. But unlike slots or craps, this is poker and your skill will turn things around. Do not let bad luck influence your game. If you let bad luck turn into bad play, then you’ve multiplied and magnified its negative influence. Instead you should put it behind you, stay strong and stable, and minimize bad luck. This is the only way to get back on your feet and see yourself through to victory.

There are some cases when even the best poker players in the world get unlucky, very unlucky, and lose. At the same time amateurish players manage to somehow win simply because they got very lucky. These players start thinking that they are better than they really are, but eventually the strong players get back on their feet, while the weak players go broke. If you think about the long run, everyone is equally lucky or unlucky. The key is how you react to your good luck or bad luck.

Come out on top by understanding poker outs

If you want to play Texas Hold’Em poker and win then you must pay attention to your strategy. There are a lot of factors that will influence your success, things like:

- What you know about your opponents;
- Your ability to read your opponents;
- Knowing when you should bluff and when you shouldn’t;
- Realizing when it is the right time to change your playing style.

All the factors presented above play an important part in your success at the Texas Hold’Em poker table. But perhaps the most important factor that you must be aware of are the poker odds. If you know the poker odds then you can make the best decision and be on top of your game. You will be playing blind if you do not know what the poker odds are. This in turn will cause you to lose your hard earned money.

Understanding how many outs you have at any given time is an important part of understanding Texas Hold’Em poker odds.

Let’s take a look at an example in order to understand this better. Let’s say that you have been dealt a Big Slick, or Ace/King. On the flop the dealer placed these cards on the table: Queen, 8, and 10. You need a Jack to hit an Ace high straight on the turn or river. Since there are 4 Jacks in the deck, you have 4 outs to hit your hand.

Let’s take a look at another example. Let’s say that you have been dealt a pocket pair. You wan to hit a set or three of a kind. This means that you have two outs to hit your hand. Your odds of getting three of a kind on the flop are 8%. You chances of getting three of a kind on the turn are 4%.

Simply divide your outs by the number of cards remaining in the deck to figure out the probabilities of you hitting your hand.

Things get a bit more complicated when you need to cards to complete your hand. All you have to do is use this simple rule and you will be able to roughly figure out the odds of you hitting your hand on the flop, turn or river. On the flop, multiply your outs by 4. On the turn, multiply by 2.
