Estonia in Full Throttle with Online Casino Licensing

News Topics
Sep 24th 2010
It might not look like there’s a bright future for online gambling, at least not in the US as laws are being debated and new bills are being passed that just might limit the future of online gambling. This might be the case in North America, especially the US, but it doesn’t mean that it’s the rule around the world, and it’s proving not to be as some countries are embracing online gambling for the first time in their history. Estonia is a country that might seem like an unexpected place to find online gambling, but it is one that has a great following, especially for poker. PokerStars even recently hosted the Baltic Classic in the region this past year, and it attracted some of the world’s hottest poker players from internationally, not just locally. With this obvious gambling industry in the region, it makes sense that Estonia would introduce online gambling and set a record at the same time!

The first license that has been issued is to Olympic Entertainment Group, which owns a number of brick and mortar casinos in Estonia and other areas of Europe like Poland, Ukraine, and Latvia. None of these places have had online casino licenses previously, so this country will be the first although this group will probably continue to expand. Olympic Entertainment Group is using Playtech software to power their games. They offer both poker and online casino games with over 150 varieties to choose from, including blackjack, roulette, video poker, and slots.

Following the success of the Baltic Festival, Estonia has been known even more as a gaming area, although the rest of the world may not have caught onto this fact yet. But, in reality, people from around the world did come and the city has great appeal since it’s capable of hosting great poker, and it’s in a gorgeous setting! With over 307 players in attendance, this festival set records for most ever in that area of the world for the No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em game! With well-known poker players also there, the popularity only increased.

So, it’s not all bad news for the world of online poker, in reality, a big part of the world is thriving and growing while the US struggles to keep their mark on the industry, even if it’s just by playing. If that turns around, hopefully soon there will be online casino roulette licensing and legalization for players to bet real money on every continent!
